The Sphinx & Pyramids of Giza: Egypt’s Most Iconic Sights

We started our trip by flying with Egypt Air on their direct service from Dublin to Cairo and experienced the warm Egyptian hospitality from the offset—a perfect introduction to what lay ahead. Touching down in Cairo, we couldn’t wait to get started on what is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest sightseeing experiences. The legendary Pyramids of Giza and the majestic Sphinx—symbols of Egypt that never fail to leave you in awe—stood before us. No matter how many times you’ve seen them in photos, standing in front of these incredible structures is something else entirely. The sheer scale and precision are breathtaking. With Dodi leading the way, every moment came to life. His knowledge of the history, myths, and mysteries surrounding the pyramids added so much depth to the experience.

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM): Egypt’s Dazzling New Landmark

One of the standout moments for me was visiting the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Sitting in the shadow of the Giza Plateau, this world-class museum is already being hailed as one of the most significant cultural projects of the century. What made it even more special for us is the fact that the GEM was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, an award-winning Irish firm. There’s a real sense of pride seeing Irish creativity play such a key role in showcasing Egypt’s incredible heritage on the world stage. Though not all galleries were open during our visit, the treasures already on display were breathtaking. I can only imagine how spectacular it will be after the official opening on 3rd July, when the Tutankhamun galleries and the Khufu Boats Museum are revealed to the world. There’s a real buzz about it too—President Higgins himself has been invited to the opening, alongside dignitaries from across the globe. Trust me, you could easily spend days immersed in the exhibits!

Cruising the Nile: Scenic Sailing on Radamis II

After our time in Cairo, we swapped the city’s buzz for the calm, timeless beauty of the Nile River. Boarding the elegant Radamis II Cruise Ship, we began the next leg of our journey—a relaxing and scenic way to explore even more of Egypt’s rich history. There’s something truly special about life on the Nile. Watching daily life unfold along the riverbanks as we cruised past palm trees, temples, and traditional villages felt like stepping back in time. The ship itself offered everything we needed—comfortable cabins, delicious food, and a sun deck perfect for taking in the ever-changing views.

Temples and Tombs: Walking Through History

Temple of Edfu.jpg

Each stop along the Nile revealed yet another treasure. Visiting the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, felt like stepping onto a film set—it’s remarkably well-preserved, and the intricate hieroglyphs still tell vivid stories. Equally moving was the Temple of Hatshepsut, an awe-inspiring structure built for Egypt’s only female pharaoh. Dodi shared her fascinating history, giving us insight into her reign and the architectural ambition of her temple. Every site felt like stepping deeper into Egypt’s incredible past.

Valley of the Kings: Stepping into Egypt’s Afterlife

One of the most incredible experiences came at the Valley of the Kings. Walking through the tombs carved deep into the cliffs, it’s impossible not to be struck by the artistry and reverence for the afterlife that defined ancient Egyptian beliefs. The vibrant wall paintings, intricate carvings, and sheer scale of the tombs are a lasting reminder of the civilisation's devotion to their pharaohs and the journey beyond life. It’s a moment that stays with you long after leaving.
